Plotting Harm Against Those Who Trusted You Sinks You

ਐਸੇ ਬ੍ਰਾਹਮਣ ਡੂਬੇ ਭਾਈ ॥

Such Brahmins shall drown, O Siblings of Destiny;
ਨਿਰਾਪਰਾਧ ਚਿਤਵਹਿ ਬੁਰਿਆਈ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

they think of doing evil to the innocent. ||1||Pause||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

Such priests sink, brothers and sisters —

they who plot to harm the innocent.

What truly sinks a person is plotting harm against those who trusted them.
The deeper layer

The Pause names the gravest line they cross: "they think of doing evil to the innocent." To harm those who trusted you is what truly sinks a person. The censure is aimed precisely — not at a role or a birth, but at the betrayal of the defenseless (cf. Shabad 63, the powerful held accountable for the weak).

A Question to Sit With

Why is harming someone who trusted you worse than an ordinary wrong?
