Verse 2 of 3

Even Before Birth, You Were Held and Kept Safe

ਅਗਨਿ ਕੁੰਟ ਮਹਿ ਉਰਧ ਲਿਵ ਲਾਗਾ ਹਰਿ ਰਾਖੈ ਉਦਰ ਮੰਝਾਰਾ ॥
agan kunt meh uraDh liv laagaa har raakhai udar manjhaaraa.
In the fiery pit of the womb, when you were hanging upside-down, the Lord absorbed You in His Love, and preserved You.
ਸੋ ਐਸਾ ਹਰਿ ਸੇਵਹੁ ਮੇਰੇ ਮਨ ਹਰਿ ਅੰਤਿ ਛਡਾਵਣਹਾਰਾ ॥੧॥
so aisaa har sayvhu mayray man har ant chhadaavanhaaraa. ||1||
So serve such a Lord, O my mind; the Lord shall deliver you in the end. ||1||

In plain words

Even before you were born — tiny and unable to do anything for yourself — you were held and kept safe.

So keep close to the One who cared for you then and will care for you all the way through.

Even before you were born, when you couldn't do anything for yourself, you were held and kept safe.
The deeper layer

A tender verse, gently rendered. The original recalls the womb: even there, before birth, "the Lord absorbed you in His Love and preserved you" — cared for you when you were utterly helpless, unable to do a thing for yourself. The intense literal imagery ("the fiery pit," "hanging upside-down") is set aside for a child; the beautiful teaching is kept: you were held and kept safe even before you were born, so you can trust that same care all the way to the end. It's one of Gurbani's most reassuring pictures — the One's care predates our very ability to ask for it. For a child: even before you were born, when you couldn't do anything for yourself, you were held and kept safe.

A Question to Sit With

How does it feel to know you were cared for even before you could ask for anything?
