Raag Basant, Shabad, Mehl 9 (Guru Tegh Bahadur)

Because nothing here lasts forever, today is precious — keep the one treasure that travels on with you.

The Arc

A tender wake-up shabad. Mind, why let the Name slip, when it is the best thing you have? The body will not last forever — and that is exactly why today is precious, the right day to keep the One close. So much of the world is a tall hill of smoke: it looks solid, but your hand goes right through, so it is worth asking which things are smoke and which are real. Money, family, house, all your things — none can be packed up and carried on, and knowing that is not sad; it helps you love the people now and hold the stuff lightly. For there is one thing that does travel on with you: the love you build for the One — so keep it close, with your whole heart in one place.

Key Vocabulary

  • man kahaa bisaario raam naam — the tender wake-up call: why let the best thing slip?
  • dhooe ka pahaar — the hill of smoke: what looks solid but is not.
  • kachh sang na chaalai — nothing material travels on with you.
  • bhagat... hoe sang — devotion, the one companion that lasts.
  • ayk rang — single-hearted love, the color that stays.

Themes and Cross-Connections

Impermanence as a reason to treasure now; the one lasting companion.

For Raag Basant

Basant's 'what lasts' meditation again — the fleeting blossom, the enduring love.

Translation Notes

M9 memento-mori handled comfort-forward: 'when the body perishes you deal with the Messenger of Death' rendered as 'the body will not last, so today is precious' — treasure-the-day, all Death-terror dropped. 'Wealth, spouse, property' rendered as a reason to love people now and hold things lightly, not a grim renunciation.
