Raag Basant
The Commentary
Raag Basant opens under the full Mool Mantar, and Guru Nanak's first move is to name the season and turn it inward: the truly blessed month is the one where sadaa basant, endless spring, rises in a heart that holds the One. The rahau asks us to set down haumai and gather virtues instead. Then the great tree-image unfolds — deeds as trunk, Name as branches, right living as blossom, wisdom as fruit, and dissolved pride as shade. The senses are turned toward wonder, listening, and the True Name, and the shabad closes with the raag's keynote: seasons pass, but the one rooted in the One stays green and never withers.
