A Gift That Reaches Everyone

ਬਸੰਤੁ ਮਹਲਾ ੩ ॥
basant mehlaa 3.
Basant, Third Mehl:
ਨਾਮਿ ਰਤੇ ਕੁਲਾਂ ਕਾ ਕਰਹਿ ਉਧਾਰੁ ॥
naam ratay kulaaN kaa karahi uDhaar.
Those who are imbued with the Naam, the Name of the Lord - their generations are redeemed and saved.
ਸਾਚੀ ਬਾਣੀ ਨਾਮ ਪਿਆਰੁ ॥
saachee banee naam pi-aar.
True is their speech; they love the Naam.
ਮਨਮੁਖ ਭੂਲੇ ਕਾਹੇ ਆਏ ॥
manmukh bhoolay kaahay aa-ay.
Why have the wandering self-willed manmukhs even come into the world?
ਨਾਮਹੁ ਭੂਲੇ ਜਨਮੁ ਗਵਾਏ ॥੧॥
naamhu bhoolay janam gavaa-ay. ||1||
Forgetting the Naam, the mortals waste their lives away. ||1||

In plain words

Those dyed in the Naam lift up and save their whole family line.

Their words are true, and they love the Naam.

Why have those who follow only their own minds, wandering lost, even come into the world?

Forgetting the Naam, they waste their lives away.

One awake heart blesses everyone around it.
The deeper layer

Goodness in one person, dyed in the Naam, spreads to a whole family.

Karahi uDhaar means they lift up and save. Those soaked in the Name lift up their whole family line. One person who wakes up to the One sends goodness rippling outward. Think of a stone dropped in a pond, and the rings that spread wider and wider. Their words are true, and their love for the Name is real.

The verse also asks about the manmukh. A manmukh is someone facing their own wants and forgetting the Name. Forgetting the Name, such a person wastes their life. The verse asks the question without anger. And the door stays open: anyone can turn back toward the Name.

A Question to Sit With

How can one person's good change ripple out to a whole family?
