Living So Fully the Small Self Fades

ਜੀਵਤ ਮਰੈ ਮਰਿ ਮਰਣੁ ਸਵਾਰੈ ॥
jeevat marai mar maran savaarai.
One who dies while yet alive, truly dies, and embellishes his death.
ਗੁਰ ਕੈ ਸਬਦਿ ਸਾਚੁ ਉਰ ਧਾਰੈ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
gur kai sabad saach ur Dhaarai. ||1|| rahaa-o.
Through the Word of the Guru's Shabad, he enshrines the True Lord within his heart. ||1||Pause||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

Whoever lets the small self die while still alive has died well, and makes even death beautiful.

Through the Guru's Word, they keep the True One in their heart.

Let the small self quiet, and the True One has room in your heart.
The deeper layer

Let the small, grabby self go quiet while you live, and your heart has room for the True One.

This is the rahaa-o, the "pause" line, the center of the shabad. Jeevat marai means dying while still living. In Gurbani this is a well-known phrase. It does not mean the body dying. It means the ego — the grabbing, fearful little self — goes quiet, while you stay fully and happily alive.

Think of a noisy room where one person finally stops shouting. Suddenly everyone can hear the music. When the small self quiets down, saach ur Dhaarai — the heart makes room to hold the True One.

A Question to Sit With

What is one worry or me-first feeling you would love to set down?
