Truth for Breakfast

ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਸਚੁ ਭੋਜਨੁ ਪਵਿਤੁ ਸਰੀਰਾ ॥
gurmukh sach bhojan pavit sareeraa.
Truth is the food of the Gurmukh; his body is sanctified and pure.
ਮਨੁ ਨਿਰਮਲੁ ਸਦ ਗੁਣੀ ਗਹੀਰਾ ॥
man nirmal sad gunee gaheeraa.
His mind is immaculate; he is forever the ocean of virtue.
ਜੰਮੈ ਮਰੈ ਨ ਆਵੈ ਜਾਇ ॥
jammai marai na aavai jaa-ay.
He is not forced to come and go in the cycle of birth and death.
ਗੁਰ ਪਰਸਾਦੀ ਸਾਚਿ ਸਮਾਇ ॥੨॥
gur parsaadee saach samaa-ay. ||2||
By Guru's Grace, he merges in the True Lord. ||2||

In plain words

For the one who faces the Guru, Truth is food, and the body is clean and pure.

Their mind is spotless, and they are forever an ocean of goodness.

They are not tossed from birth to death, coming and going.

By the Guru's grace, they merge into the True One.

Feed on what is true, and you grow steady inside.
The deeper layer

Truth can be your everyday food, and it makes you clear and steady inside.

Gurmukh sach bhojan — truth is the food of the gurmukh. A gurmukh is someone who faces the Guru. Truth here is not something you use once in a while. It is what you eat every day, what keeps you going. The same picture appears elsewhere in Gurbani: truth as food, clothes and home.

Think of how the food you eat becomes part of your body. When truth is your food, it becomes part of you. Such a person is gunee gaheeraa — deep as an ocean of good qualities. They stop being tossed from birth to birth, and by the Guru's grace they settle into the True One.

A Question to Sit With

If truth were a food, what do you think it would taste like?
