In plain words

There is only One. And the One is found by the True Guru's grace — a gift that is always here, waiting for an open heart.

You walk along like a cow.

The hair on your tail is shiny and glossy.

A wandering, greedy mind ambles happily along without noticing where it is headed.
The deeper layer

A greedy, wandering mind strolls about like a cow, pleased with its shiny tail.

This last shabad of Raag Basant is by Kabir, and it is funny on purpose. It opens with the short blessing: One Creator, known by the True Guru's grace.

Then Kabir paints a picture. Surah kee jaisee tayree chaal — you walk like a cow. The creature strolls about, very pleased with its glossy tail. It stands for the greedy, wandering mind.

Think of a cat strutting through the kitchen, tail high, sure no one will notice what it is after. Kabir smiles at the mind the same way. He shows it to itself so it can laugh and change.

A Question to Sit With

When does your mind wander off, and where does it usually go?
