Eat at Home — Don't Go Prowling

ਇਸ ਘਰ ਮਹਿ ਹੈ ਸੁ ਤੂ ਢੂੰਢਿ ਖਾਹਿ ॥
is ghar meh hai so too dhoondh khaahi.
Look around, and eat anything in this house.
ਅਉਰ ਕਿਸ ਹੀ ਕੇ ਤੂ ਮਤਿ ਹੀ ਜਾਹਿ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
a-or kis hee kay too mat hee jaahi. ||1|| rahaa-o.
But do not go out to any other. ||1||Pause||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

Whatever is here in this house, look around for it and eat that.

Do not go out to anyone else's house.

There is enough in your own home; you do not need to prowl after what is not yours.
The deeper layer

Everything you need is already in your own home.

This is the rahaa-o, the "pause" line, the center of the shabad. Is ghar meh hai so too dhoondh khaahi — whatever is in this house, look for it and eat that. A-or kis hee kay too mat hee jaahi — do not go into anyone else's house.

The house is your own heart, where the One already lives. There is enough there. This echoes the whole raag's call to come home inside, the same home Raamaanand sang of.

Think of a fridge full of food at home while you peek into a neighbor's lunchbox. What you need is already yours.

A Question to Sit With

What good things do you already have at home that you sometimes overlook?
