Verse 5 of 5

The Name Erases Every Line of Caste

ਸਾਧੂ ਕੀ ਜਉ ਲੇਹਿ ਓਟ ॥
saaDhoo kee ja-o layhi ot.
If you seek the Support of the Holy,
ਤੇਰੇ ਮਿਟਹਿ ਪਾਪ ਸਭ ਕੋਟਿ ਕੋਟਿ ॥
tayray miteh paap sabh kot kot.
millions upon millions of your sins shall be totally erased.
ਕਹਿ ਰਵਿਦਾਸ ਜੋੁ ਜਪੈ ਨਾਮੁ ॥
kahi ravidaas jo japai naam.
Says Ravi Daas, one who chants the Naam, the Name of the Lord,
ਤਿਸੁ ਜਾਤਿ ਨ ਜਨਮੁ ਨ ਜੋਨਿ ਕਾਮੁ ॥੪॥੧॥
tis jaat na janam na jon kaam. ||4||1||
is not concerned with social class, birth and rebirth. ||4||1||

In plain words

If you take shelter with the holy people,

millions and millions of your wrongs will be wiped away.

Ravi Daas says: whoever chants the Naam

is free of class, of birth, and of being born again and again.

Keeping the Naam close dissolves every line people draw between each other.
The deeper layer

Whoever keeps the Naam close is free from being sorted by caste or birth.

First, lean on saaDhoo, good and holy people. In their company, kot kot, millions of old mistakes are washed away. Then the big line: tis jaat na janam na jon — that person is not bound by jaat (caste, the group you are born into), by birth, or by being born again and again.

In Ravi Daas's time, caste sorted people by the family they were born into. Some were treated as lower than others. Ravi Daas was one of the people others looked down on. So these words from him carry special strength. Think of a team where the coach picks players only by their last name. The Naam throws that rule away. Everyone is welcome.

A Question to Sit With

How do you feel when someone is judged by their group instead of who they are?
