Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

You gave us our soul, our breath of life, our body.

I was foolish, and yet You made me beautiful by placing Your light inside me.

We are all beggars at Your door, O One, and You are kind to us.

Chanting the Naam, we rise up, glad and bright.

Almost everything you have was given to you — and that is a reason for joy.
The deeper layer

Everything you have was given to you, and chanting the Naam lifts you up.

Jee-a paraan tumH pind deenH — You gave us jee-a, the soul, paraan, the breath, and pind, the body. Mugadh sundar dhaar jot keenH — I was mugadh, foolish, and You made me sundar, beautiful, by placing Your jot, Your light, inside. Think of a plain clay lamp. Light a flame in it and it glows.

Sabh jaachik — we are all beggars, standing with open hands before a kind Giver. That is simple honesty. Nobody made their own breath. Naam japat hovat nihaal — chanting the Naam, we are lifted up, glad and whole.

A Question to Sit With

What is something you have that was given to you, not earned?
