In plain words

The Guru is the True Banker, the Giver of peace, who joins you to the One and takes away your hunger.

Out of kindness, the Guru plants loving devotion firmly in you, and then night and day you sing the praises of the One.

The truest treasure is peace and belonging, planted in you by the Guru.
The deeper layer

The Guru is like a banker whose treasure is peace. Saachaa saahu guroo sukh-daata — the Guru is the true banker, the giver of peace. The Guru's wealth is peace, and being joined to the One.

Har maylay bhukh gavaa-ay — the Guru joins us to the One and takes away our hunger. This hunger is the ache for more and more that new things never fill. Think of getting the newest game, and wanting the next one a week later. That hunger quiets when the heart is joined to the One.

Kar kirpaa — out of kindness, the Guru plants devotion firmly inside. Then it grows into song: an-din har gun gaa-ay, singing the One's praises day and night. The treasure lasts, and it is placed in you.

A Question to Sit With
