Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

In the heart of someone who has gone wrong, strong wanting has made its home.

That restless mind darts about like a bird, and it cannot be held still.

A restless mind is normal — and it can still learn to settle.
The deeper layer

A heart taken over by strong wanting has a mind that will not sit still.

The verse calls it the heart of a paapee, someone who has gone wrong. That heart is full of kaam, strong desire. And the mind is chanchal — restless, jumping from one thing to the next.

Think of a phone that keeps buzzing with new alerts. You pick it up, put it down, pick it up again. You cannot settle. This is the rahaa-o, the pause line, the center of the shabad. It names a problem every person meets. The next verses show where help comes from.

A Question to Sit With

What helps your mind settle when it won't stop darting around?
