Verse 3 of 3

Free of Praise and Blame

ਉਸਤਤਿ ਨਿੰਦਾ ਦੋਊ ਪਰਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਕੀਰਤਿ ਉਰਿ ਆਨੋ ॥
ustat nindaa do-oo parhar har keerat ur aano.
Leave behind both praise and slander; enshrine the Kirtan of the Lord's Praises within your heart.
ਜਨ ਨਾਨਕ ਸਭ ਹੀ ਮੈ ਪੂਰਨ ਏਕ ਪੁਰਖ ਭਗਵਾਨੋ ॥੨॥੧॥
jan naanak sabh hee mai pooran ayk purakh bhagvaano. ||2||1||
O servant Nanak, the One Primal Being, the Lord God, is totally permeating everywhere. ||2||1||

In plain words

Let go of both praise and blame. Keep songs of the One's praise in your heart.

Nanak, the One's servant, says: the one first Being, the Lord, fills every place and every person, all the way through.

You do not have to bounce up and down with every bit of praise or blame.
The deeper layer

You do not have to rise and fall with every word people say about you. Ustat nindaa do-oo parhar — set aside both praise and blame. Ustat is praise; nindaa is blame, putting someone down. Har keerat ur aano — bring songs of the One's praise into your heart instead.

The last line carries the name Nanak. Jan naanak sabh hee mai pooran ayk purakh bhagvaano — the One is fully present in everyone.

Think of a lighthouse. Waves splash high and fall low, and it stands still. When you see the same One in every person, their words weigh less, and your kindness grows.

A Question to Sit With

How do you stay steady when someone praises you one day and criticizes you the next?
