Verse 2 of 3

Hold It Lightly

ਇਹੁ ਜਗੁ ਹੈ ਸੰਪਤਿ ਸੁਪਨੇ ਕੀ ਦੇਖਿ ਕਹਾ ਐਡਾਨੋ ॥
ih jag hai sampat supnay kee daykh kahaa aidaano.
The wealth of this world is only a dream; why are you so proud of it?
ਸੰਗਿ ਤਿਹਾਰੈ ਕਛੂ ਨ ਚਾਲੈ ਤਾਹਿ ਕਹਾ ਲਪਟਾਨੋ ॥੧॥
sang tihaarai kachhoo na chaalai taahi kahaa laptaano. ||1||
None of it shall go along with you in the end; why do you cling to it? ||1||

In plain words

The riches of this world are like treasure in a dream. Why are you so proud of them?

None of it will go along with you in the end. Why do you hold on to it so tightly?

You can enjoy nice things fully and still hold them with open hands.
The deeper layer

The world's riches are like treasure in a dream. Ih jag hai sampat supnay kee — the wealth of this world is dream-wealth. Sampat means riches. So why be proud of it?

Sang tihaarai kachhoo na chaalai taahi kahaa laptaano — none of it goes along with you, so why cling to it? The question is gentle. It invites open hands, not guilt.

Think of dreaming that you found a chest of gold coins. You wake up, and your hands are empty. You can still enjoy nice things. Just hold them lightly, and save your tight grip for what lasts.

A Question to Sit With

What is something you love that you could still enjoy without gripping it tightly?
