In plain words

There is only One. And the One is found by the True Guru's grace — a gift that is always here, waiting for an open heart.

O holy people, know that this body is only passing; it does not last.

The One who lives inside it — know that One alone as true.

The most lasting thing about you lives quietly inside the part that changes.
The deeper layer

Your body is here for a season, and the One living inside it is what lasts.

This is the rahaa-o, the pause line, the center of the shabad, and it comes first. The shabad is by Guru Tegh Bahadur, the ninth Guru. Ih tan mithi-aa jaan-o — know that this body does not last. Mithi-aa means passing, here for a while. It does not mean the body is worthless. Yaa bheetar jo raam basat hai saacho taahi pachhaano — the One who lives inside it, know that One as true.

Think of a blossom on a spring branch. It is beautiful, and it is here for a season. The tree it grows from stays. Get to know the lasting One inside you, starting now.

A Question to Sit With

What part of you feels like it stays the same, even as everything else grows and changes?
