The Word That Carries You Over

ਅਵਰੁ ਉਪਾਉ ਨ ਕੋਈ ਸੂਝੈ ਨਾਨਕ ਤਰੀਐ ਗੁਰ ਬਚਨੀ ॥੪॥੩॥੨੧॥
avar upaa-o na ko-ee soojhai naanak taree-ai gur bachnee. ||4||3||21||
It is the Guru's Word that carries us across; Nanak cannot think of any other way. ||4||3||21||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

Nanak says: I cannot think of any other way.

It is the Guru's Word that carries us across.

When you can't see the way across, a trusted word can carry you.
The deeper layer

The Guru's Word is the way across.

Avar upaa-o na ko-ee soojhai means I cannot think of any other way. Taree-ai gur bachnee means we cross over by the Guru's word.

Life can feel like rough water. Think of a rope stretched across a river. You hold on, and step by step it carries you safely to the other side. The Guru's word is that rope. You do not have to be afraid of the water. You just hold on.

A Question to Sit With

Whose words help carry you through when you can't see the way?
