Verse 1 of 5

The Waves of Wanting Keep Coming

ਲੋਭ ਲਹਰਿ ਅਤਿ ਨੀਝਰ ਬਾਜੈ ॥
lobh lahar at neejhar baajai.
The tidal waves of greed constantly assault me.
ਕਾਇਆ ਡੂਬੈ ਕੇਸਵਾ ॥੧॥
kaa-i-aa doobai kaysvaa. ||1||
My body is drowning, O Lord. ||1||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

Big waves of greed keep crashing over me, again and again.

My body is sinking under them, O Keshav, my Lord.

When wanting keeps crashing over you, it is okay to reach for a hand.
The deeper layer

Greed can feel like waves crashing over you until you start to go under.

Lobh lahar: the waves of greed. At neejhar baajai: they keep pounding, again and again. Kaa-i-aa doobai: the body sinks. Kaysvaa, Keshav, is a loving name for the One that Namdev uses.

Think of a swimmer caught in rough surf who calls out to the lifeguard. The cry here goes up to the One.

A Question to Sit With

When you feel overwhelmed, who or what do you reach for?
