taar lai baap beethulaa. ||1|| rahaa-o.
Carry me across, O Beloved Father. ||1||Pause||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

Carry me across the wide ocean of this world, O Gobind, Lord of the Universe.

Carry me across, Beethula, my Beloved Father.

It is safe to ask to be carried when the crossing is too much alone.
The deeper layer

When the world feels like a wide, rough ocean, you can ask the One to carry you across like a loving father.

This is the rahaa-o, the "pause" line, the center of the shabad. Sansaar samunday taar gobinday: carry me across the world-ocean, Gobind, Lord of the Universe. Taar lai baap beethulaa: carry me across, Beloved Father. Beethula (Vithal) is a tender name for the One that Namdev loved.

Think of a small child lifted onto a parent's shoulders to cross a cold stream. The child does not have to know the way. The cry is simple trust.

A Question to Sit With

When has someone strong helped carry you through something hard?
