The Gift Is Simply to Serve

ਗੰਗਾ ਗਇਆ ਗੋਦਾਵਰੀ ਸੰਸਾਰ ਕੇ ਕਾਮਾ ॥
gangaa ga-i-aa godaavree sansaar kay kaamaa.
Pilgrimages to the Ganges, the Gaya and the Godawari are merely worldly affairs.
ਨਾਰਾਇਣੁ ਸੁਪ੍ਰਸੰਨ ਹੋਇ ਤ ਸੇਵਕੁ ਨਾਮਾ ॥੩॥੧॥
naaraa-in suparsan ho-ay ta sayvak naamaa. ||3||1||
If the Lord were totally pleased, then He would let Naam Dayv be His servant. ||3||1||

In plain words

Trips to the Ganges, to Gaya and to the Godavari are only worldly business.

Namdev says: if Narayan, the One, is fully pleased with me, I will get to be the One's servant.

The gift worth longing for is to serve the One, right where you are.
The deeper layer

Trips to famous holy rivers belong to the busy everyday world, and the gift worth wanting is to serve the One.

He names great pilgrimage places: the Ganga, Gaya and the Godavari. People travel far to visit them. Namdev calls these trips sansaar kay kaamaa — worldly business, like any other errand.

What does he want instead? To be the One's sayvak, a servant and helper. It is like a child who does not need a fancy outing to feel close to a parent. Just helping in the kitchen together is enough. That closeness can happen anywhere, right where you are.

A Question to Sit With

What is something meaningful you can do right where you are, without going anywhere?
