In plain words

There is only One. And the One is found by the True Guru's grace — a gift that is always here, waiting for an open heart.

The world is like a crow: it does not keep the Naam in mind. Forgetting the Naam, it spots the bait and pecks at it.

The mind wobbles this way and that, unsteady, full of guilt and tricks.

I have broken off my false love for the world.

A mind that forgets what lasts keeps chasing what fades.
The deeper layer

A mind that forgets the Naam is like a crow darting at bait.

The world is like a crow, Guru Nanak says. Naam nahee cheet — it does not keep the Naam in mind. So it sees the bait and pecks at it. Think of a crow in a park, darting at every shiny wrapper, then flying off to the next one. It never settles.

The mind that forgets the Naam wobbles like that. It is unsteady, full of guilt and tricks. Jag si-o tootee jhooth pareet — but I have broken off my false love for the world. Jhooth pareet means love aimed at things that are not real and do not last. Letting that go is the first step toward what lasts. The rest of the shabad builds from here.

A Question to Sit With

What are the shiny things your mind chases and then forgets?
