naam binaa kaisay gun chaar. ||1|| rahaa-o.
Without the Naam, how can the mortal maintain a virtuous lifestyle? ||1||Pause||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

Strong wanting, anger and wrongdoing are a load as heavy as stone.

Without the Naam, how can anyone live a good life?

A kind life grows from resting your heart on the Naam.
The deeper layer

A good life grows from the Naam, while craving and anger only weigh you down.

This is the rahaa-o, the pause line, the center of the shabad. Kaam kroDh bikh bajar bhaar — craving, anger and wrongdoing are a crushing load. Think of a backpack stuffed with rocks. You can barely walk, let alone run and play.

Naam binaa kaisay gun chaar — without the Naam, how can a good life be lived? Goodness grows from the Naam, like a plant that grows from good soil. Rest your heart in the Naam, and the load starts to lift.

A Question to Sit With

When your heart feels heavy, what helps you set the weight down?
