Sikhism·Raag Basant·Shabad 64
Verse 3 of 9

A House Built on a Wave

ਘਰੁ ਬਾਲੂ ਕਾ ਘੂਮਨ ਘੇਰਿ ॥
ghar baaloo kaa ghooman ghayr.
The world is like a house of sand, built on a whirlpool;
ਬਰਖਸਿ ਬਾਣੀ ਬੁਦਬੁਦਾ ਹੇਰਿ ॥
barkhas banee budbudaa hayr.
it is like a bubble formed by drops of rain.
ਮਾਤ੍ਰ ਬੂੰਦ ਤੇ ਧਰਿ ਚਕੁ ਫੇਰਿ ॥
matar boond tay Dhar chak fayr.
It is formed from a mere drop, when the Lord's wheel turns round.
ਸਰਬ ਜੋਤਿ ਨਾਮੈ ਕੀ ਚੇਰਿ ॥੨॥
sarab jot naamai kee chayr. ||2||
The lights of all souls are the servants of the Lord's Name. ||2||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

The world is like a house of sand built on a whirlpool, like a bubble made by drops of rain.

It is shaped from a single drop as the One's wheel turns round.

The light in every soul serves the Naam.

The fragile things pass; the light in every life belongs to the One.
The deeper layer

The world is as fragile as a bubble, and the light in every soul serves the Naam.

Ghar baaloo kaa ghooman ghayr — a house of sand, built on a whirlpool. Think of a sandcastle at the edge of the sea. One wave, and it is gone. The world is also like a budbudaa — a bubble made by raindrops, which pops in a moment.

But then the verse turns. Sarab jot naamai kee chayr — the light in every soul serves the Naam. Jot means the inner light, the spark of life. Under all the fragile shapes of the world is something that never pops.

A Question to Sit With

What is something that lasts, even when other things wash away?
