Nothing Hidden at the End

ਸਰਬ ਉਪਾਇ ਗੁਰੂ ਸਿਰਿ ਮੋਰੁ ॥
sarab upaa-ay guroo sir mor.
My Supreme Guru has created everything.
ਭਗਤਿ ਕਰਉ ਪਗ ਲਾਗਉ ਤੋਰ ॥
bhagat kara-o pag laaga-o tor.
I perform devotional worship service to You, and fall at Your Feet, O Lord.
ਨਾਮਿ ਰਤੋ ਚਾਹਉ ਤੁਝ ਓਰੁ ॥
naam rato chaaha-o tujh or.
Imbued with Your Name, I long to be Yours.
ਨਾਮੁ ਦੁਰਾਇ ਚਲੈ ਸੋ ਚੋਰੁ ॥੩॥
naam duraa-ay chalai so chor. ||3||
Those who do not let the Naam become manifest within themselves, depart like thieves in the end. ||3||

In plain words

My great Guru made everything there is.

I worship You and fall at Your feet. Colored by Your Naam, I long to be Yours.

Whoever keeps the Naam hidden and never lets it shine within leaves in the end like a thief.

Let the Naam live in you, and you keep what lasts.
The deeper layer

Serving the One brings you close, and hiding the Naam away leaves you with empty hands.

Guru Nanak says the great Guru made everything. So he wants to serve, to rest at the One's feet and belong, colored through with the Naam.

Then comes a sharp picture. Naam duraa-ay chalai so chor — whoever hides the Naam leaves like a thief. This is not a threat. It shows a quiet loss. Think of a gift you locked in a drawer and never opened. At the end, you leave without ever enjoying what was yours. A life that keeps the Naam away from the heart ends with empty hands.

A Question to Sit With

Is there something good you sometimes keep locked away instead of letting it in?
