The Mind That Wanders

Basant, First Mehl:
ਮਨੁ ਭੂਲਉ ਭਰਮਸਿ ਆਇ ਜਾਇ ॥

The mind is deluded by doubt; it comes and goes in reincarnation.

It is lured by the poisonous lure of Maya.

It does not remain stable in the Love of the One Lord.

In plain words

Fooled by doubt, the mind wanders off, coming and going, born again and again.

It is pulled along by Maya, the world's shiny bait, sweet on the outside and poison inside.

It does not stay steady in love for the One.

It is like a fish with the hook caught in its throat.

A doubting mind drifts and gets caught; love for the One holds it still.
The deeper layer

A mind full of doubt drifts from want to want, and craving catches it the way a hook catches a fish.

Man bhoolao bharmas aae jaae: the mind, fooled by doubt, keeps coming and going. Maya is the pull of the world's glitter. The fish-and-hook image (jio meen kundleeaa) shows how craving catches us the instant we bite. What the mind lacks is steady love for the One (ek bhaae).

A Question to Sit With

What pulls your mind off course when you are trying to stay steady?
