The Long Wandering

ਬਸੰਤੁ ਮਹਲਾ ੫ ॥
basant mehlaa 5.
Basant, Fifth Mehl:
ਅਨਿਕ ਜਨਮ ਭ੍ਰਮੇ ਜੋਨਿ ਮਾਹਿ ॥
anik janam bharamay jon maahi.
The mortal wanders in reincarnation through countless lifetimes.
ਹਰਿ ਸਿਮਰਨ ਬਿਨੁ ਨਰਕਿ ਪਾਹਿ ॥
har simran bin narak paahi.
Without meditating in remembrance on the Lord, he falls into hell.
ਭਗਤਿ ਬਿਹੂਨਾ ਖੰਡ ਖੰਡ ॥
bhagat bihoonaa khand khand.
Without devotional worship, he is cut apart into pieces.
ਬਿਨੁ ਬੂਝੇ ਜਮੁ ਦੇਤ ਡੰਡ ॥੧॥
bin boojhay jam dayt dand. ||1||
Without understanding, he is punished by the Messenger of Death. ||1||

In plain words

A person wanders through countless lifetimes, one after another.

Without remembering the One, they fall into a dark pit of suffering. Without loving worship, they are torn to pieces inside.

Without understanding, they are caught and punished by death.

A life that forgets the One wanders and comes apart, longing for home.
The deeper layer

Without remembering the One, a life wanders and comes apart.

Anik janam bhramay: wandering through countless lifetimes. The pictures that follow are hard ones: a fall into hell, being cut to pieces, punishment from death's messenger. They show a life with no center, scattered and in pain. Without har simran, remembering the One, and without bhagat, loving worship, nothing holds a person together.

From this ache, the shabad moves steadily toward home.

A Question to Sit With

What does it feel like to be far from home and long to get back?
