ti-o har jan jeevai har Dhi-aa-ay. ||1||
In the same way, the humble servant of the Lord lives by meditating on the Lord. ||1||

In plain words

A shopkeeper sets up shop for goods and money.

A gambler's mind is always on the next bet.

Someone hooked on opium, a strong drug, lives for the next dose.

In the same way, the One's servant lives by holding the One in mind.

Everyone's day runs on something — it is worth choosing what.
The deeper layer

Everyone lives by the thing their mind is fixed on, and the One's people live by the One.

The verse holds up three people. The hatvaanee, the shopkeeper, thinks about goods and money. The joo-aaree, the gambler, has his mind on the bet. The amlee, someone hooked on opium, lives for the next dose.

None of them has to try to think about these things. Their minds go there on their own. Ti-o har jan jeevai har dhi-aa-ay — in the same way, the One's servant lives by remembering the One. For them it is like breathing. It keeps them going.

A Question to Sit With

What is the one thing your day seems to run on?
