Each Heart Follows Its Own Thread

jit parabh laa-i-aa tit tit lagai. ||1|| rahaa-o.
He is attached to whatever God attaches him to. ||1||Pause||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

Everyone is wrapped up in the things they love.

Whatever the One attaches them to, that is what they hold on to.

The flow of life gently steers each heart toward what it loves.
The deeper layer

Each person is soaked in their own delight, and the flow of life sets each one on their path.

This is the rahaa-o, the "pause" line, the center of the shabad. Apnai rang sabh ko rachai — everyone is absorbed in their own rang, their own color or delight. The shopkeeper loves the shop, and the gambler loves the bet.

Jit prabh laa-i-aa tit tit lagai — whatever the One attaches a person to, they hold on to that. This is hukam, the flow of existence. Think of streams running down a hill. Each one finds its own channel. The verse sees the One behind every channel, and the One's servants are the ones set on the One.

A Question to Sit With

What is a 'thread' you notice yourself following again and again?
