Peacocks, Moonlight, and Mothers

ਮੇਘ ਸਮੈ ਮੋਰ ਨਿਰਤਿਕਾਰ ॥
maygh samai mor nirtikaar.
When the clouds and the rain come, the peacocks dance.
ਚੰਦ ਦੇਖਿ ਬਿਗਸਹਿ ਕਉਲਾਰ ॥
chand daykh bigsahi ka-ulaar.
Seeing the moon, the lotus blossoms.
ਮਾਤਾ ਬਾਰਿਕ ਦੇਖਿ ਅਨੰਦ ॥

When the mother sees her infant, she is happy.
ਤਿਉ ਹਰਿ ਜਨ ਜੀਵਹਿ ਜਪਿ ਗੋਬਿੰਦ ॥੨॥
ti-o har jan jeeveh jap gobind. ||2||
In the same way, the humble servant of the Lord lives by meditating on the Lord of the Universe. ||2||

In plain words

When the rain clouds come, the peacocks dance.

When the lotus sees the moon, it opens.

When a mother sees her baby, she fills with joy.

In the same way, the One's servants live by remembering the Lord of the World.

The whole world lights up for the thing it loves — and so can you.
The deeper layer

The One's people come alive in the One, the way all of nature comes alive for what it loves.

Here are three happy pictures. Maygh samai mor nirtikaar — when the clouds gather, the peacocks spread their feathers and dance. In India the peacock dances when the monsoon rain is coming. Chand daykh bigsahi ka-ulaar — seeing the moon, the night lotus opens its petals. Maataa baarik daykh anand — a mother lights up at the sight of her child.

Nobody teaches a peacock to dance. It just happens when the clouds come. Ti-o har jan jeeveh jap gobind — in just this way, the One's servants come alive when they remember the One.

A Question to Sit With

What makes you light up the way a peacock dances in the rain?
