Everyone Leans on Something

ਸਿੰਘ ਰੁਚੈ ਸਦ ਭੋਜਨੁ ਮਾਸ ॥
singh ruchai sad bhojan maas.
The tiger always wants to eat meat.
ਰਣੁ ਦੇਖਿ ਸੂਰੇ ਚਿਤ ਉਲਾਸ ॥
ran daykh sooray chit ulaas.
Gazing upon the battlefield, the warrior's mind is exalted.
ਕਿਰਪਨ ਕਉ ਅਤਿ ਧਨ ਪਿਆਰੁ ॥
kirpan ka-o at Dhan pi-aar.
The miser is totally in love with his wealth.
ਹਰਿ ਜਨ ਕਉ ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਆਧਾਰੁ ॥੩॥
har jan ka-o har har aaDhaar. ||3||
The humble servant of the Lord leans on the Support of the Lord, Har, Har. ||3||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

A tiger always wants meat to eat.

When a warrior sees the battlefield, his heart lifts high.

A miser loves his money more than anything.

The One's servant leans on the One, Har, Har, for support.

Everyone leans on something — choose something that can hold you.
The deeper layer

Everyone leans on something, and the One's people lean on the One.

Singh ruchai sad bhojan maas — the tiger always hungers for meat. That is simply its nature. Ran daykh sooray chit ulaas — seeing the battlefield, the brave warrior's heart leaps with eagerness. Kirpan ka-o at dhan pi-aar — the miser loves wealth with his whole heart.

Each one has something that pulls them. Har jan ka-o har har aadhaar — for the One's servant, the One is the aadhaar, the support. Think of a young vine climbing a fence. Take the fence away and it slumps to the ground. The One is the fence the servant grows along.

A Question to Sit With

What do you lean on when things get hard?
