The Thief That Steals the Jewel

ਇਸੁ ਤਨ ਮਨ ਮਧੇ ਮਦਨ ਚੋਰ ॥
is tan man maDhay madan chor.
Within the body and mind are thieves like sexual desire,
ਜਿਨਿ ਗਿਆਨ ਰਤਨੁ ਹਿਰਿ ਲੀਨ ਮੋਰ ॥
jin gi-aan ratan hir leen mor.
which has stolen my jewel of spiritual wisdom.
ਮੈ ਅਨਾਥੁ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਕਹਉ ਕਾਹਿ ॥
mai anaath parabh kaha-o kaahi.
I am a poor orphan, O God; unto whom should I complain?
ਕੋ ਕੋ ਨ ਬਿਗੂਤੋ ਮੈ ਕੋ ਆਹਿ ॥੧॥
ko ko na bigooto mai ko aahi. ||1||
Who has not been ruined by sexual desire? What am I? ||1||

In plain words

Inside this body and mind lives a thief: wanting, the strong grabbing pull of desire.

It has stolen my jewel of wisdom.

I am like an orphan with no one to look after me, O One. Who can I tell?

Who has this wanting not knocked down? And what am I, that I could stand against it?

The restless, grabbing pull inside is something to bring to the One, not to hate yourself for.
The deeper layer

A thief lives inside the body and mind: wanting that grabs and grabs, and steals the jewel of wisdom.

Is tan man madhay madan chor: inside this body and mind is the thief of desire. Gi-aan ratan hir leen mor: it has stolen my jewel of wisdom. Mai anaath: I am like an orphan. Ko ko na bigooto: who has this pull not knocked down?

Kabir does not pretend to be stronger than everyone else. This pull catches everyone. Think of a pickpocket in a crowd: you do not notice until your pocket is empty. Naming the thief is the first step, and the cry goes straight to the One. Wanting and ego are things to heal, and nothing to hate yourself for.

A Question to Sit With

When your mind feels grabby and restless, what helps you settle it?
