In plain words

O my friends and companions, listen with love in your hearts.

My Beloved is beautiful beyond compare, and is always with me.

My Beloved is unseen and cannot be seen. How can I describe Him?

The Guru has shown me that my King, the One, is right here with me.

The One you cannot see has been right beside you the whole time.
The deeper layer

The One cannot be seen, and yet the One is always with us.

The song is sung in the warm voice of a young bride talking to her sakhee, her close friends. In Gurbani, the soul is often a bride and the One is her Beloved.

She says her Beloved is reesaaloo, beautiful beyond compare, and sang saa-ay, always with her. But oh alakh na lakhee-ai — He is unseen, He cannot be seen. So how can she describe Him? Here is the gift. Gur sang dikhaa-i-o raam raa-ay — the Guru showed her that her King was with her.

Think of hunting everywhere for your glasses while they sit on your head. A good friend just points. The Guru does not bring the One from far away. The Guru shows that the One was near all along.

A Question to Sit With

Has anyone ever helped you notice something good that was there all along?
