Verse 1 of 5

Small, and Reaching Up

ਬਸੰਤੁ ਮਹਲਾ ੩ ਇਕ ਤੁਕੇ ॥
basant mehlaa 3 ik tukay.
Basant, Third Mehl, Ik-Tukas:
ਤੇਰਾ ਕੀਆ ਕਿਰਮ ਜੰਤੁ ॥
tayraa kee-aa kiram jant.
I am just a worm, created by You, O Lord.
ਦੇਹਿ ਤ ਜਾਪੀ ਆਦਿ ਮੰਤੁ ॥੧॥
deh ta jaapee aad mant. ||1||
If you bless me, then I chant Your Primal Mantra. ||1||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

I am only a tiny creature, a little worm that You made, O One.

If You give it to me, then I chant Your first and oldest mantra.

Even the smallest creature can hold the deepest Name.
The deeper layer

You are small, and still the One can give you the oldest Naam to chant.

This shabad is ik-tukay, made of single-line verses. Kiram jant: a worm, a tiny creature, small before something vast. Deh ta jaapee aad mant: if You give it, I chant the first mantra; the Naam is received as a gift.

Think of lying on the grass at night under a sky full of stars. You feel tiny, and full of wonder.

A Question to Sit With

When has feeling small filled you with wonder instead of sadness?
