Sikhism·Raag Basant·Shabad 24
Verse 5 of 5

Held Inside, Spread Everywhere

ਵਡਭਾਗੀ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਬੀਚਾਰਾ ॥
vadbhaagee har naam beechaaraa.
By great good furtune, some contemplate the Lord's Name.
ਛੂਟੈ ਰਾਮ ਨਾਮਿ ਦੁਖੁ ਸਾਰਾ ॥
chhootai raam naam dukh saaraa.
Through the Lord's Name, all sorrows are eradicated.
ਹਿਰਦੈ ਵਸਿਆ ਸੁ ਬਾਹਰਿ ਪਾਸਾਰਾ ॥
hirdai vasi-aa so baahar paasaaraa.
He dwells within the heart, and pervades the external universe as well.
ਨਾਨਕ ਜਾਣੈ ਸਭੁ ਉਪਾਵਣਹਾਰਾ ॥੪॥੧੨॥
naanak jaanai sabh upaavanhaaraa. ||4||12||
O Nanak, the Creator Lord knows all. ||4||12||

In plain words

By great good fortune, some think deeply on the Naam of the One.

Through the Naam, every sorrow is wiped away.

The One lives inside the heart and spreads across the whole world outside too.

Nanak says: the Creator knows everything.

The One inside your heart is the same One holding the whole universe.
The deeper layer

The One inside your heart is the same One that fills the whole universe.

Chhootai raam naam dukh saaraa — through the Naam, every sorrow is let go. Lucky are the ones who think about the Naam quietly and often.

Hirdai vasi-aa so baahar paasaaraa — the One who lives in the heart is spread across everything outside, too. Think of the sun. The same sun warms your face through the window and lights up the whole sky. There is not one sun for you and another for the world. And that One, Guru Amar Das says, is the Creator who knows all.

A Question to Sit With

Does it change anything to think the One is both inside you and everywhere?
