What Makes You Great

ਕਲਿ ਮਹਿ ਰਾਮ ਨਾਮਿ ਵਡਿਆਈ ॥
kal meh raam naam vadi-aa-ee.
In this Dark Age of Kali Yuga, glorious greatness comes through the Lord's Name.
ਗੁਰ ਪੂਰੇ ਤੇ ਪਾਇਆ ਜਾਈ ॥
gur pooray tay paa-i-aa jaa-ee.
Through the Perfect Guru, it is obtained.
ਨਾਮਿ ਰਤੇ ਸਦਾ ਸੁਖੁ ਪਾਈ ॥
naam ratay sadaa sukh paa-ee.
Those who are imbued with the Naam find everlasting peace.
ਬਿਨੁ ਨਾਮੈ ਹਉਮੈ ਜਲਿ ਜਾਈ ॥੩॥
bin naamai ha-umai jal jaa-ee. ||3||
But without the Naam, mortals burn in egotism. ||3||

In plain words

In this dark age, Kali Yuga, greatness comes through the Naam of the One.

It is found through the Perfect Guru.

Those dyed in the Naam find peace that lasts forever.

Without the Naam, people burn in ego.

Ego is a fever; the Name is the cool water that heals it.
The deeper layer

Greatness comes from the Naam, and the Naam cools the fever of ego.

Kal meh raam naam vadi-aa-ee — in this age, greatness comes through the Naam. Kal or Kali Yuga is the name for our present age, often called a dark or hard time. Even here, the Naam is the path you can count on. It comes through the Perfect Guru.

Bin naamai ha-umai jal jaa-ee — without the Naam, people burn in ha-umai. Ha-umai means ego, the "me, me, me" feeling. Think of a fever. It makes you hot and restless and unable to rest. Ego works like that, and it is more like an illness than a crime. The Naam is the medicine that gently cools it down.

A Question to Sit With

What cools you down when you feel puffed-up or overheated inside?
