Raag Basant
Commentary

Raag Basant, Ik-Tukay, Mehl 5 (Guru Arjan)

When calm settles in the heart, it is always spring inside — green and blooming, whatever the season outside.

The Arc

The eternal-spring shabad. The One heals the sickness and holds the person safe like a small child. Then calm and ease fill the heart forever — sad basant, an unending spring — as one enters a true teacher's shelter and keeps the freeing Name close. Sorrow and the heavy ache are cut away. Anyone who keeps the Name finds every good thing ripening like fruit, and grows steady and deep-rooted. The devotees have found a beautiful way to live: keeping the Giver of peace in mind, day after day.

Key Vocabulary

  • rog mitaae — the sickness healed (the ego imaged as an illness that mends).
  • sad basant — forever spring: Basant's title-word made the state of the soul.
  • kaliaan roop — the Name as the very shape of freedom and wellbeing.
  • sabh fal paae — all fruits ripening, a spring-and-harvest image.
  • bhagtaa bhalee reet — the lovely way of the devotees.

Themes and Cross-Connections

Spring as a permanent inner climate; steadiness as deep-rootedness.

For Raag Basant

'sad basant' — forever spring — is the raag's keyword turned into the soul's own weather.

Translation Notes

'God Himself has cured the disease' kept as gentle healing (the ego as a sickness that mends, not a sin to be punished). The 'springtime of the soul' foregrounded as the shabad's Basant keynote.
