In plain words

Prahlaad was sent to school.

He took many of his friends along with him.

He asked his teacher, "Why do you teach me all this worldly tangle? Write the Naam of the dear Lord of the World on my tablet."

A whole heart can want one true thing more than all the ordinary lessons.
The deeper layer

A child can want one true thing more than all the ordinary lessons.

Kabir tells the old story of Prahlaad. He was a boy who loved the One with his whole heart. His father was a proud and cruel king.

Parahlaad pathaa-ay parhan saal — Prahlaad was sent to school, and he took many friends along. When lessons began, he asked why he was being taught only worldly things. Mayree patee-aa likh dayh saree gopaal — write the Name of the dear Lord on my tablet. The patee-aa was a writing board, like a small whiteboard.

Think of a kid who loves music so much they draw piano keys in the margin of every notebook. Prahlaad's heart already knew what it wanted to learn.

A Question to Sit With

If you could learn one thing more than anything else, what would it be?
