In plain words

There is only One. And the One is found by the True Guru's grace — a gift that is always here, waiting for an open heart.

In the village of the body lives a child who cannot hold still, not even for a moment.

It tries so many ways, makes so many efforts, until it is worn out, and still it wanders off again and again.

The restless mind is like a child who cannot sit still — until it comes home.
The deeper layer

Your mind is like a child who cannot sit still.

Nagar ik baalak vasi-aa — in the village of the body, a child lives. Baalak means a small child. Khin pal thir na rahaa-ee — it will not stay still, not for one moment.

Anyone who has tried to sit quietly knows this child. You close your eyes, and your thoughts jump to lunch, then a game, then something a friend said. It is like a puppy in a new house, sniffing every corner.

Anik upaav jatan kar thaakay — it tries so many things and gets tired. And still it wanders off, again and again. The rest of the shabad shows what finally lets it rest: coming home.

A Question to Sit With

When your thoughts are jumping everywhere, what helps them finally settle down?
