Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa
Pilgrimages to holy places, reading the Simritis, giving to charity — these bring some small gain, like a day's wage.
Nanak says: remember the Naam for a single moment, and glorious greatness is yours.
Good deeds bring their reward, and remembering the One brings something greater still.
Going to holy places, reading the old scriptures and giving to people in need all bring their reward. Laahaa milai dihaarhee — they earn a day's honest wage. Guru Nanak does not brush them aside.
He simply points higher. Remembering the Naam — the Name, the living presence of the One — brings a greatness of its own. It takes only one gharhee, a short moment. Think of a hug from someone who loves you. It lasts a few seconds, but you carry it all day. The Naam is what stays with you.
What is one small moment today when you could quietly remember the One?
