Green After Water

ਬਸੰਤੁ ਮਹਲਾ ੫ ॥
basant mehlaa 5.
Basant, Fifth Mehl:
ਮਿਲਿ ਪਾਣੀ ਜਿਉ ਹਰੇ ਬੂਟ ॥
mil paanee ji-o haray boot.
As the plant turns green upon receiving water,
ਸਾਧਸੰਗਤਿ ਤਿਉ ਹਉਮੈ ਛੂਟ ॥
saaDhsangat ti-o ha-umai chhoot.
just so, in the Saadh Sangat, the Company of the Holy, egotism is eradicated.
ਜੈਸੀ ਦਾਸੇ ਧੀਰ ਮੀਰ ॥
jaisee daasay Dheer meer.
Just as the servant is encouraged by his ruler,
ਤੈਸੇ ਉਧਾਰਨ ਗੁਰਹ ਪੀਰ ॥੧॥
taisay uDhaaran gurah peer. ||1||
we are saved by the Guru. ||1||

In plain words

As a plant turns green when it gets water,

so in the Sangat my ego, the "all about me" feeling, falls away.

As a servant takes heart from the ruler,

so the Guru lifts us up and saves us.

The Sangat is water to a thirsty heart.
The deeper layer

A dry plant turns green when it gets water. In the same way, the Sangat washes away your pride.

mil paanee ji-o haray boot — when water reaches a plant, it turns green. saaDhsangat ti-o ha-umai chhoot — in the saaDhsangat, the Sangat — people gathered together to remember the One — ha-umai drops away. Ha-umai is the "all about me" feeling.

Think of a wilted plant on a windowsill. You water it, and by evening it stands up tall again. The Sangat does that for a heart. Guru Arjan adds another picture. A good leader gives courage to the people who follow. In the same way, the Guru lifts us up and saves us.

A Question to Sit With

When have you felt dried-up inside, then suddenly refreshed by the right people?
