I Sing the Song You Gave Me

ਮੇਰੇ ਸਾਹਿਬਾ ਹਉ ਆਪੇ ਭਰਮਿ ਭੁਲਾਣੀ ॥
mayray saahibaa ha-o aapay bharam bhulaanee.
O my Lord and Master, I am deluded by doubt.
ਅਖਰ ਲਿਖੇ ਸੇਈ ਗਾਵਾ ਅਵਰ ਨ ਜਾਣਾ ਬਾਣੀ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
akhar likhay say-ee gaavaa avar na jaanaa banee. ||1|| rahaa-o.
I sing the Word which You have written; I do not know any other Word. ||1||Pause||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

O my Master, I myself have wandered off, lost in doubt.

I sing only the words that You have written; I know no other Word.

Even the song I sing back to the One is a gift the One first placed in me.
The deeper layer

You can get lost in your own doubt, and the words you sing to the One were written by the One.

This is the rahaa-o, the "pause" line, the center of the shabad. It is disarmingly honest: hau aapay bharam bhulaanee — I got lost by my own confusion, no one else to blame, and no shame in the saying. And then a beautiful line about where every good word comes from: akhar likhay say-ee gaavaa — I sing only the words You wrote. Even our praise of the One is a gift the One placed in us first. It is humility and belonging in one breath.

A Question to Sit With

Where do you think your very best ideas and words come from?
