A Sacrifice to Your Many Names

ਨਾਨਕੁ ਵੇਚਾਰਾ ਕਿਆ ਕਹੈ ॥
naanak vaychaaraa ki-aa kahai.
What can poor Nanak say?
ਸਭੁ ਲੋਕੁ ਸਲਾਹੇ ਏਕਸੈ ॥
sabh lok salaahay ayksai.
All people praise the One Lord.
ਸਿਰੁ ਨਾਨਕ ਲੋਕਾ ਪਾਵ ਹੈ ॥
sir naanak lokaa paav hai.
Nanak places his head on the feet of such people.
ਬਲਿਹਾਰੀ ਜਾਉ ਜੇਤੇ ਤੇਰੇ ਨਾਵ ਹੈ ॥੪॥੨॥
balihaaree jaa-o jaytay tayray naav hai. ||4||2||
I am a sacrifice to Your Names, as many as there are, O Lord. ||4||2||

In plain words

Nanak says: what can I, a humble one, say?

All people praise the One.

I lay my head at the feet of those people.

I give myself in love to every one of Your Names, as many as there are.

Every name people sing the One with is pointing at the same One.
The deeper layer

Humility can open up into togetherness with everyone.

Sabh lok salaahay ayksai — all people praise the one same One. It is a quiet line, and a bold one. People use many different names, in many traditions. Guru Nanak says they are all turning toward the same One. Think of cousins from different countries, each calling their grandmother by a different word: Nani, Grandma, Abuela. Different words, one grandmother.

So he bows at the feet of everyone who praises. Then he says balihaaree jaa-o jaytay tayray naav hai. Balihaaree means giving yourself over completely, in love. He gives himself to every one of the One's names, as many as there are. In a single breath, Guru Nanak makes room for everyone.

A Question to Sit With

Have you noticed how people in different places have different names for the same wonderful things?
