Verse 2 of 5

Soaked in the True Name

ਰੇ ਮਨ ਲੇਖੈ ਕਬਹੂ ਨ ਪਾਇ ॥
ray man laykhai kabhoo na paa-ay.
O my mind, these things are worthless,
ਜਾਮਿ ਨ ਭੀਜੈ ਸਾਚ ਨਾਇ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
jaam na bheejai saach naa-ay. ||1|| rahaa-o.
if you are not drenched with the True Name. ||1||Pause||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

O my mind, all these things count for nothing

if you are not soaked all the way through in the True Name.

What counts is a heart soaked through with the Naam.
The deeper layer

All that shine means little unless you are soaked in the True Name.

This is the rahaa-o, the pause line, the center of the shabad.

Jaam na bheejai saach naa-ay means if you are not drenched in the True Name. Bheejai means soaked all the way through.

Think of a T-shirt dropped into a bucket of dye. It only changes color if the dye soaks right through. Or think of a garden after a spring rain. Being drenched is exactly what makes things grow.

A spotless outside, with no soaking inside, stays dry. The heart is where the rain has to reach.

A Question to Sit With

What is the difference between doing something perfectly and doing it with your whole heart?
