The Treasure of Praise

ਜੇਤੇ ਜੀਅ ਲਿਖੀ ਸਿਰਿ ਕਾਰ ॥
jaytay jee-a likhee sir kaar.
Each person's karma is written on his forehead.
ਕਰਣੀ ਉਪਰਿ ਹੋਵਗਿ ਸਾਰ ॥
karnee upar hovag saar.
According to their deeds, they shall be judged.
ਹੁਕਮੁ ਕਰਹਿ ਮੂਰਖ ਗਾਵਾਰ ॥
hukam karahi moorakh gaavaar.
Only the foolish and the ignorant issue commands.
ਨਾਨਕ ਸਾਚੇ ਕੇ ਸਿਫਤਿ ਭੰਡਾਰ ॥੪॥੩॥
naanak saachay kay sifat bhandaar. ||4||3||
O Nanak, the treasure of praise belongs to the True Lord alone. ||4||3||

In plain words

Each person's karma, the work they do, is written on their forehead.

What you do is what gets weighed.

Only the foolish and unwise go around giving orders.

Nanak says: the whole treasure of praise belongs to the True One alone.

You are known by how you live, not by the title you carry.
The deeper layer

You are known by how you live, not by the title you carry.

Karnee upar hovag saar means what you do is what gets weighed. Think of a report card. It shows the work you did, not the nice pencil case you brought to class.

Hukam karahi moorakh gaavaar means only the foolish go around giving orders. It is a gentle warning about ego, the part of us that wants to boss everyone around.

The last line gives everything back to the Source. Naanak saachay kay sifat bhandaar means the treasure of praise belongs to the True One. It does not belong to anyone doing a ceremony, however grand.

A Question to Sit With

If someone could see everything you did this week, what would it show about you?
