Sikhism·Raag Basant·Shabad 31
Verse 2 of 5

In Every Single Place

ਏਕੋ ਹਰਿ ਰਵਿਆ ਸ੍ਰਬ ਥਾਇ ॥
ayko har ravi-aa sarab thaa-ay.
The One Lord is permeating and pervading all places.
ਗੁਰ ਸਬਦੀ ਮਿਲੀਐ ਮੇਰੀ ਮਾਇ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
gur sabdee milee-ai mayree maa-ay. ||1|| rahaa-o.
Through the Word of the Guru's Shabad, we merge with Him, O my mother. ||1||Pause||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

The One alone fills every place.

Through the Guru's Word we meet the One and melt into the One, O my mother.

There is no place the One is not already.
The deeper layer

The One fills every place, and the Guru's Word is how you meet the One.

This is the rahaa-o, the "pause" line, the center of the shabad. Ayko har ravi-aa sarab thaa-ay — the One fills every place. There is no corner where the One is not.

Then comes the way home. Gur sabdee milee-ai mayree maa-ay — through the Guru's Word we meet the One, O my mother. The tender call "O my mother" is also heard in the songs of Guru Amar Das.

Think of air. It fills every room of a house, even the ones you never visit. The Guru's Word is how you notice you have been breathing it all along.

A Question to Sit With

Where is a place you feel most sure you are not alone?
