Sikhism·Raag Basant·Shabad 44
Verse 3 of 5

Empty Hands, One Hope

ਜਾਪ ਨ ਤਾਪ ਨ ਕਰਮ ਕੀਤਿ ॥
jaap na taap na karam keet.
I have not practiced meditation, austerities or good actions.
ਆਵੈ ਨਾਹੀ ਕਛੂ ਰੀਤਿ ॥
aavai naahee kachhoo reet.
I do not know the way to meet You.
ਮਨ ਮਹਿ ਰਾਖਉ ਆਸ ਏਕ ॥
man meh raakha-o aas ayk.
Within my mind, I have placed my hopes in the One Lord alone.
ਨਾਮ ਤੇਰੇ ਕੀ ਤਰਉ ਟੇਕ ॥੨॥
naam tayray kee tara-o tayk. ||2||
The Support of Your Name shall carry me across. ||2||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

I have not done meditation, hard practices or good deeds.

I don't know any way to reach You.

In my mind I keep one hope: You alone.

Leaning on Your Naam, I will be carried across.

You do not have to earn your way — one true hope is enough.
The deeper layer

Your one hope rests in the One, and the Naam carries you across.

jaap na taap na karam keet — no meditation, hard practices or good deeds done. naam tayray kee tarau tayk — leaning on the Naam, I cross over. Grace is a gift; no technique earns it.

A Question to Sit With

Do you think good things have to be earned, or can some just be given?
