In plain words

O my beautiful Beloved, deep and steady as the sea, dear as a red jewel.

Turned toward the Guru, I sing the praises of the Naam of the One. You are beyond every limit, and You care for all.

The One is both endlessly vast and closer than a dearest friend.
The deeper layer

My beautiful, deep, dear One is beyond every limit and cares for everyone.

This is the pause line, the rahaa-o, the center of the shabad. It is full of love.

Sundar means beautiful. Gahir gambheer means deep and steady, like the ocean. Laal means beloved, as precious as a red jewel. Here the One is not a far-away force. The One is someone you can love, the way you love the people closest to you.

Aprampar means beyond every limit. Sarab paal means the One who looks after everyone. So the One is huge and warm at the same time. Think of the night sky over your grandparents' house. It is endless, and yet it feels like home.

Gun gaa-ay means singing the One's goodness. Singing is simply how that love comes out.

A Question to Sit With

Can something be very big and very close and dear at the same time?
