Don't Forget and Drift

ਮਤ ਹਰਿ ਵਿਸਰਿਐ ਜਮ ਵਸਿ ਪਾਹਿ ॥
mat har visri-ai jam vas paahi.
If you forget the Lord, you will fall into the clutches of the Messenger of Death.
ਅੰਤ ਕਾਲਿ ਮੂੜੇ ਚੋਟ ਖਾਹਿ ॥੭॥
ant kaal moorhay chot khaahi. ||7||
At that very last moment, you fool, you shall be beaten. ||7||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

If you forget the One, death will take hold of you.

At the very end, foolish friend, you will take a hard blow.

Forgetting the One leaves you drifting; remembering keeps you anchored.
The deeper layer

Forgetting the One leaves you in death's grip, with a hard blow waiting at the end.

Mat har visriai: do not forget the One. Jam is death, pictured as a messenger who comes to take you. Forgetting leaves you drifting and buffeted; remembering keeps you anchored.

A Question to Sit With

When life feels like it is tossing you around, what helps you feel anchored?
