Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

I beg for the dust of the feet of Your saints.

Be kind to me and give it, so I may put it on my forehead.

The humblest place — the dust of loving feet — is the one worth asking for.
The deeper layer

Ask for the humblest place, the dust of the saints' feet, and wear it as your honor.

This is the pause line, the rahaa-o, the center of the shabad. It is about being humble: I ask only for the dust from the feet of Your saints.

Charan rayn means the dust of the feet. It stands for the lowest, humblest place. And that is exactly what the seeker asks for, as the highest honor.

Lay mastak laava-o means let me put it on my forehead. It is a way of saying: let the humble goodness of those who love the One rub off on me. Think of a young player who wants to be just like a kind team captain, and copies how she treats everyone.

Everything else in this shabad grows from this bowed, open heart.

A Question to Sit With

Who is someone so good that just being near them makes you kinder?
