Even the Fire and Water Fail the Test

ਅਗਨਿ ਭੀ ਜੂਠੀ ਪਾਨੀ ਜੂਠਾ ਜੂਠੀ ਬੈਸਿ ਪਕਾਇਆ ॥
agan bhee joothee paanee joothaa joothee bais pakaa-i-aa.
The fire is impure, and the water is impure. The place where you sit and cook is impure.
ਜੂਠੀ ਕਰਛੀ ਪਰੋਸਨ ਲਾਗਾ ਜੂਠੇ ਹੀ ਬੈਠਿ ਖਾਇਆ ॥੩॥
joothee karchhee parosan laagaa joothay hee baith khaa-i-aa. ||3||
Impure is the ladle which serves the food. Impure is the one who sits down to eat it. ||3||

In plain words

The fire is unclean, and the water is unclean. The place where you sit and cook is unclean.

The ladle that serves the food is unclean, and the one who sits down to eat it is unclean too.

If even fire and water fail the test, the test is pointing at the wrong thing.
The deeper layer

Even fire and water fail this test, and those are the very things people use to make things clean.

agan bhee joothee paanee joothaa — the fire is unclean and the water is unclean. The place where you cook is unclean. The ladle that serves the food is unclean. The person who eats is unclean too.

Imagine washing your hands, then being told the soap and the water are dirty as well. There is no way to finish. Once you start counting what is "unclean," nothing can escape. So the problem must be the counting itself.

A Question to Sit With

What is a better way to tell whether something — or someone — is good?
